There are hundreds of strength training exercises. Our exercise database lists over 1500, sorted by body part, target muscle and equipment. To choose well, start from your goal (muscle, strength, general fitness), your equipment and your level, then combine compound lifts (squat, bench press, deadlift) with isolation exercises for a balanced program.
For chest, the basics are bench press, incline dumbbell press, dips, and cable flyes or push-ups. For back, focus on pull-ups, barbell or dumbbell rows, lat pulldowns and deadlifts. Pair a pushing exercise with a pulling exercise in your program to keep your shoulders balanced and your posture solid over time.
For biceps: barbell curls, dumbbell curls, hammer curls and chin-ups. For triceps: dips, skull crushers, cable pushdowns and close-grip bench press. For shoulders: overhead press, lateral raises and face pulls for the rear delts. Two to three exercises per muscle per week are enough, on top of the compound lifts that already train them.
For legs, squats, leg press, lunges and Romanian deadlifts cover your quads and hamstrings. For glutes, add hip thrusts, glute bridges and Bulgarian split squats. Finish with standing or seated calf raises. At home, bodyweight or dumbbell squats, lunges and hip thrusts already do a great job of building lower-body strength.
Add these exercises to your personalized program and track your progress.

The most effective ab exercises combine core bracing and flexion: planks and side planks, crunches, hanging leg raises, ab wheel rollouts and mountain climbers. Almost all of them need little or no equipment. Two to three short sessions a week are enough. To actually see your abs, training isn't everything: body fat level, and therefore nutrition, plays a major role.
In general, 4 to 6 exercises per workout is enough. Start with the most demanding compound movements, then finish with isolation work. Aim for 3 to 4 sets per exercise and adjust to your level and recovery. Quality beats quantity: fewer exercises done well, with weights that keep progressing, beat piling on more movements.
